The hobbyist

There are probably many more of these types of sites on the internet than those wanting to make money from anything they publish online. I see many just browsing around and some I see would be a potential gold mine if they did decide to ever allow ads on their site.

Not everyone is out to make money and that is refreshing to see.

Some hobbyists may choose to use a free hosting service to host their site because they don't have the extra funds to use a paid hosting service. Depending on who they use, you may see a discreet link or banner or be inundated with popup ads galore.

If you come across a site that spawns multiple popups, be sure to have some anti spyware installed on your computer. Winpatrol is a nice little application that will alert you if some ad is trying to install spyware on your computer.

Once your site is popular enough, you might decide to go for a paid hosting company to avoid the forced ads on your site, or as in the case with newer free hosting "companies", that close down overnight and suddenly your popular site is no longer viewable.

If you think that sometime in the future you may want to place ads, it will go virtually unnoticed if you add some links or a small graphic that you can later replace with ads. If you have been using a free host with advertising and change to a paid hosting solution, viewers will be used to the ad, so placing a link or banner the same size that the free host used will barely be noticed.
